Black ICE is an Artificial Intelligence created for WorldCorp by Evil Invasion and That Guy. WorldCorp uses it for internal and external security. It spies on WorldCorp employees to determine who isn't working as efficiently as they could and reports on such individuals to King. It will also fry the frontal lobes of anyone attempting to gain access to WorldCorp systems without proper clearance. Black ICE claims it was authorized to use lethal force in accordance with the Turing convention of 2001.
WorldCorp documentation reveals that Black ICE is supported by four Dynamic-class servers stationed in the WorldCorp Network Maintenance Complex. The same documentation says that Black ICE is "almost an AI". They say it is distinguished from a full-fledged AI because it has no personality, no direct user interface, and no ability to learn, but they note that it can react to input and make observations just like an AI. This means that while it is able to analyse a situation and react accordingly, it cannot transcend its original programming.
A second version of Black ICE was created by Evil Invasion to assist Andreus in his attempt to gain access to WorldCorp systems. Because the full Black ICE system required a network of high-speed servers, Andreus' version was scaled down. Even with his own version of Black ICE to protect him the original Black ICE was able to damage Andreus to the point that he returned from his mission half demented and with malfunctioning augmentations.
Role in Game
In the PlanetDeusEx storyline, Evil Invasion asks the player to upload a virus to Black ICE via That Guy's PC terminal because he is feeling guilty of creating it in the first place.
It is possible to activate a Black ICE interface in the AI lab on the second level of WorldCorp (see Locations below). You can then order the AI to turn off every security camera in the building if you have high enough clearance.
Locations
The Black ICE server room in the sublevel under WorldCorp HQ. This is where the player, in the PlanetDeusEx storyline, uploads the virus to corrupt Black ICE.
If the player wants to have a dialog with this AI, he needs to get to the 2nd floor at WorldCorp HQ, find the AI room, and press 4 buttons on an elevated level. Then, Black ICE reveals its face and can chat with the player
