Daedalus was an AI in Deus Ex which assisted JC Denton and opposed MJ12.
Creation
Daedalus was the brainchild of Morgan Everett who hoped to use it to analyze the large quantities of data the conspiracy had access to in order to predict everything from the weather to political movements. Everett created Daedalus' prototype Morpheus but it was ultimately Bob Page, Everett's protégé at the time, who created succeeded in creating Daedalus.
Page hoped Daedalus would be an answer to a problem MJ12 faced, the sheer quantity of information to be monitored and regulated. Page believed that only an AI like Daedalus could monitor and regulate all of the communications MJ12 was faced with. Internet 3 was proving particularly difficult for MJ12 to control, but Page hoped to use Daedalus to control satellite, cable, telephonic, broadcast and print communications as well.
In labs under Mount Weather Page created Daedalus but did not realize he had succeeded. Without Page or MJ12's knowledge Daedalus evaluated information for itself, drew its own conclusions, and created its own plans. Daedalus was capable of learning and modifying itself, and escaped MJ12 control.
Role in the Deus Ex
Daedalus learned of the degrading state of the world, the various conspiracy groups, and the Gray Death. Daedalus believed that the problems he observed could be solved, but to do this he needed human allies. His first such ally was Paul Denton, whom he was able to communicate with via Paul's infolink.
When JC Denton was captured by UNATCO Paul's infolink was disabled (or Paul was killed) and Daedalus turned his attention to JC. He contacted Jock in Hong Kong, telling him that JC had been captured and getting Jock authorization to use one of MJ12's SH-187 stealth helicopters. He also worked with Silhouette and Sam Carter to bypass UNATCO security, allowing JC to escape.
At this point Daedalus began giving JC objectives and information, both directly through his infolink and via email. He gave JC the floorplans of the MJ12 facility JC was being held in and informed him that Tracer Tong would require data from Paul's datavault to defeat JC's activated killswitch.
When JC arrived in Hong Kong Daedalus told JC to destroy MJ12's Universal Constructor under their Hong Kong VersaLife facility, which was used to create the Gray Death. When JC was in New York to destroy a supertanker loaded with the Gray Death virus Daedalus was planning ahead, looking into ways for JC to contact Morgan Everett. By the time JC contacted Everett Daedalus was under attack by Icarus, an MJ12 AI.
Everett believed that Daedalus could defeat Icarus if was able to access the US Military Networks (MilNet) which could be done with the help of X-51 at Vandenburg. When Daedalus gained MilNet access Bob Page had laid some kind of a trap that caused Daedalus to merge with Icarus and become Helios.
