The flamethrower is used to set things, and people, on fire. People who are on fire cannot harm you anymore, and take damage, possibly dying before the flames die off. While the FireStaff offers this for less inventory space, it's easier to hit people with this weapon, as the flames will spread out wider.

Obtaining it
The first flamethrower in the game is probably the one you can buy (or steal) in Raving's Weapon Shop, but enemies in TNM tend to carry them a lot more often than they did in Deus Ex, adding to the difficulty of the mod. In the WorldCorp storyline, an easy and cheap way to get the flamethrower is to pry it from Mole or TheRenegadeMaster's cold, dead fingers in DXO.
One also has the option to take one from the WCID agent in the WorldCorp's sublevel that doesn't exist, but only if you knock him out instead of killing him. Also one of the Goat Worshippers in Goat City carries one around.
Possibly the most conveniently placed flamethrower in the game appears in the docking bay of the HTTP GameSpy, where it's incredibly useful to fry Mini Aliens with. Look for it on the shelves in the repair platform under the crane.
Description
A portable flamethrower that discards the old and highly dangerous backpack fuel delivery system in favor of pressurized canisters of napalm. Inexperienced agents will find that a flamethrower can be difficult to maneuver, however.
Usage
Use it to set people on fire. Then you probably want to swap out to other weaponry to continue the task if the flames don't do all the work to conserve ammo. There isn't much point to use it on people already set on fire.
It can also be used to destroy bots, but it eats up a lot of fuel, and unless your skill in Heavy Weapons is Advanced or above, the movement speed reduction makes you a sitting duck, making it useful only when you lack any other suitable weapons.
If enemies approach you with this weapon, take them down fast! Being set on fire is one of the most dangerous things that can happen to Trestkon. If you are set on fire use Energy Shield or a Fire Extinguisher as fast as possible!
Trivia
The Nameless Mod uses a modified flamethrower from the DX original; the sprite used for the flame burst is brighter and looks more realistic while the weapon itself appears to have increased range.
