GameSpy is a shadowy organisation that runs all of ForumPlanet in secret from their space station, the HTTP GameSpy. All members of GameSpy are aliens (or use alien avatars if you will). Only a few powerful individuals in Forum City know about GameSpy's existence, most importantly Despot, their middle man in PDX Forum City. Not even the moderators know about GameSpy.

History in Forum City

  • 2000: GameSpy contacts Deus Ex Incarnate, offering to host them on ForumPlanet. DXI accepts. The planetization is carried out with disastrous consequences due to carelessness from GameSpy.
  • 2003: GameSpy commissions WorldCorp to build the ROFL, taking care to hide their true identity.
  • 2004: The WC Intelligence Department (WCID) discovers part of the truth about GameSpy. Try as he might, however, Scara cannot locate GameSpy's base of operations. GameSpy learns of the Firestaff through Despot. Realizing the artifact's potential, GameSpy are determined to obtain it; they abduct Deus Diablo.

Presence in Forum City

GameSpy have no permanent base of operations in Forum City, but a disused surveillance station of theirs can be found in the sewers under the Corporate District on Day 1.

For GameSpy's base of operations, see HTTP GameSpy.

Foreshadowing

The existence of GameSpy are foreshadowed at several points before the big reveal. Lynn and her cat Bunky in the PDX HQ on day 1 are apparently disguised GameSpy agents sent to track down an escaped test subject. The bum behind the AMD building in the Corporate District claims to have heard that aliens abducted Deus Diablo. An abandoned GameSpy surveillance room can be found in the Corporate Sewers (though you're never told it's theirs). Despot's password has been changed by GameSpy to "GS_Rulez". The datacube in TRM's office in the DXO Hideout contains a recorded telephone conversation between Despot and Silverdawn.

A few emails between some of the aliens can be found on the PC in the thread control room in DXI. A dead alien can be found in the WCID prisons on day 2. Most computers start with a Gamespy prefix, just as most computers in Deus Ex started with Daedalus, and GameSpy's name appears in a couple of other places, such as in every ATM (which are part of the "GS Global Banking System") and on every street light in the Downtown sector.

Story

Gamespy is limited in their ability to control the various Forum Cities on the globe because the power of their station, the HTTP GameSpy has to be channelled through individuals; the admins and moderators. The entire game of TNM is because of Despot mentioning the abilities of the Firestaff to his contact person with Gamespy, Silverdawn. Instead of finding the staff however they wish to extract the secret from the creator, Deus Diablo. With the might of the firestaff's technology they no longer need to use administrators and moderators and can control directly what happens on the planet below.
