In reality
In reality I.F.F Stands for Identification friend or foe. I.F.F technology manipulates microwaves to query a response from incoming targets.
These systems are almost always protected by encryption keys to make it less possible to provide a false positive. In military transport I.F.F
systems only respond when queried by a friendly network, at which point they can be sorted.

In the mod
- In the nameless mod and in the original Deus Ex I.F.F is one of the original augmentations the player receives, it is also described as a form of bot decision making in the mod.
Augmentation
- I.F.F is one of the augmentation the player receives at the beginning of the game. along with Light Enhancement, and the upgraded personal messaging system (called an infolink in Deus Ex.) The I.F.F augmentation cannot be upgraded, obtained, or modified in anyway (without editing game files.) The I.F.F is basically the entity in the player which shows green or red over friendly or hostile AIs.
Bot Recognition
- In the nameless mod I.F.F is referred to on multiple occasions. In almost all of these encounters I.F.F is associated with hacking. Ex. at the beggining of day 2 (after arising from the DXI ruins) in the PDX storyline you will get a PM from evil invasion alerting you that he stopped worldcorp's original ambush with a backdoor to the bot's I.F.F system. You will see two friendly worldcorp goon bodies. So, obviously, he hacked the bots to think that the worldcorp goons were enemies, and that you are friendly.
- Another example of I.F.F reference in the game is called while hacking a terminal in Aunt Betty industries. This terminal inside the main factory (where you meet the skinner) will allow you the special option to 'reprogram MilBot I.F.F' After selecting this option the three disabled military bots outside will become friendly and attack enemies. This is because (esentially) their friend or foe recognition has been set in your favor.
