The Vortex Grenade is an extremely powerful grenade to use against organic enemies. Due to its sheer power, it has limited availability throughout TNM.
Obtaining it
The following grenades can be found on all item difficulties:
- In the WC HQ in a crate near Easter Egg #8.
- Kylie's room in the WC "non-existent" basement on day 2.
- ABI guard in starting tunnel has 4 Vortex Grenades in version 1.0.2 and earlier. In version 1.0.3, he will instead have gas grenades.
The following grenades can only be found with item difficulty 2 or lower:
- In the DXO Hideout under a plank in a hole in the floor.
- In one of the offices in the Old Server Complex after uploading ShadowCode.
- Top level Air-Traffic Control Tower, take the stairs to the left of the elevator.
- At the gates of ABI, use your Speed Enhancement and the nearby crates to get on top of the guard shack. It's inside the hatch ontop of it.
- HTTP GameSpy near the Master Control Mainframe (on deck 1).
The following grenades can only be found with an item difficulty of 1:
- In the secret The Initiated room in the Goat Templae(TM).
- When jumping over the lava in DXI.
- In the Corporate District Sewers, near the entrance to the WC Sublevel, where the large spiderbot patrols, on day 2.
- In the ABI Ruins, go up from the barracks, over a narrow ledge to the other side. The grenade is behind a secret door that is opened by using the candle.
Description
As far as you can tell from the packaging, this is a highly experimental and morally ambiguous weapon that manipulates dark matter to create a swirling vortex around a tiny black hole, sucking in anything that isn't nailed to the floor and crushing it into a fine paste. Although it doesn't come with safety instructions, it's probably a safe bet that you should stand well clear of the detonation spot.
Usage
The Vortex Grenade is dangerous, but when used correctly can cause far more damage than any other weapon in the game. When the grenade explodes, everything in a large radius gets sucked towards the generated vortex. This includes the player, and objects can even be dragged when behind walls or in vents, so be careful! After flying around helplessly for a while, most organic enemies will be reduced to gibs and blood splatters, although some are resistant to the vortex effects. Needless to say, this can cause great fun when thrown into large groups of enemies.
Be warned though; the grenades are rather useless against bots (you need 3 to kill a Milbot) and opponents with the Energy Shield at a decent level other than restricting their movement for a few seconds, and doing some minor damage. Another thing you should keep in mind is that items are thrown around randomly after the victims are killed, sometimes making a critical item you are looking for hard to find or impossible to reach.
Another thing worth noting is that vortex grenades can penetrate force-fields, such as the one that protects High Priest Beefman of The Llama Cult.
